About this treatment
This is the field of dentistry concerned with diseases of the tissues surrounding the teeth. Removing tartar can already be the first step in prevention, since persistent inflammation leads to bone and gum recession and later to loose and lost teeth.
What does pocket depth mean?
With healthy gums the sulcus is 1–2 mm deep. In periodontal disease that figure increases, and in severe cases it can reach 10–12 mm. Deeper pockets can develop a more aggressive bacterial flora that requires targeted treatment.
How the treatment works
With closed or open curettage — under local anaesthesia, using special hand instruments — we clean the tooth surfaces and remove the inflamed tissue.
Where teeth have already become mobile, splinting can be used: the affected teeth are joined to more stable ones with a glass-fibre reinforcement, further extending their life.
